Capsule Migration and Deformation in a Converging Micro-Capillary

نویسندگان

چکیده

The lateral migration of elastic capsules towards a microchannel centerline plays major role in industrial and physiological processes. Via our computational investigation, we show that constriction connecting two straight microchannels facilitates the capsule considerably, which is relatively slow channels. Our work reveals significant cross-streamline inside dominated by strong hydrodynamic forces due to size. However, downstream channel, increased interfacial deformation at higher capillary numbers or lower viscosity ratio membrane hardness results migration. Thus, highlights different mechanisms occurring over curved streamlines.

Determining a membrane's shear modulus, independent of its area-dilatation modulus, via capsule flow in a converging micro-capillary.

Determination of the elastic properties of the membrane of artificial capsules is essential for the better design of the various devices that are utilized in their engineering and biomedical applications. However this task is complicated owing to the combined effects of the shear and area-dilatation moduli on the capsule deformation. Based on computational investigation, we propose a new method...

Viscoelastic effects on drop deformation in a converging pipe flow

his paper reports finite-element simulations of drop deformation in converging flows in an xisymmetric conical geometry. The moving interface is captured using a diffuse-interface model nd accurate interfacial resolution is ensured by adaptive refinement of the grid. We have explored he effects of viscoelasticity on drop deformation when either the drop or the matrix is a Giesekus uid. Contrary...

Deformation of a Capsule in a Power-Law Shear Flow

An immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method is developed for fluid-structure interactions involving non-Newtonian fluids (e.g., power-law fluid). In this method, the flexible structure (e.g., capsule) dynamics and the fluid dynamics are coupled by using the immersed boundary method. The incompressible viscous power-law fluid motion is obtained by solving the lattice Boltzmann equation. The no...

Deformation analysis in microstructures and micro-devices

The mechanical behaviors of microstructures and micro-devices have drawn the attention from researchers on materials and mechanics in recent years. To understand the rule of these behaviors, the deformation measurement techniques with micro/nanometer sensitivity and spatial resolution are required. In this paper, a micro-marker identification method is developed to measure microstructure deform...

Deformation of a micro-torque swimmer

The membrane tension of some kinds of ciliates has been suggested to regulate upward and downward swimming velocities under gravity. Despite its biological importance, deformation and membrane tension of a ciliate have not been clarified fully. In this study, we numerically investigated the deformation of a ciliate swimming freely in a fluid otherwise at rest. The cell body was modelled as a ca...
